Themes that run through my works include the state of the exile, (both metaphysical and spatial,) the clash and consumption of merging cultures, the glory of colour, the space within the frame and the need for art to communicate.
Each piece has a theme that is processed through many layers of mixed media. All subsequent layers add to, highlight or disguise the original idea, or bring it back from the depths. Often it can be related to a literary work, whether it is a quote from a Haruki Murakami book, a sonnet by Shakespeare, or a more contemporary comment such as a phrase a friend says or a newspaper article that I have come across. Words, and the power they hold over us contributes greatly as a catalyst for a new work.
